Top 5 Things NOT to do in Iceland

I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to Iceland a few times. During several of my excursions and speaking with the guides, there are some things every traveler to Iceland should know.

  1. Do not trample across the moss and other lightly grassy areas. The ecosystem in Iceland as diverse as it is, is also rather delicate. Iceland over the years has brought in scientists from across the globe to find things that will not only grow, but also sustainable through the harsh climate. Areas where you find moss growing has taken literally years to grow in. In the words of the Boy Scouts of America: “Leave No Trace”.DSC_4129
  2. Do not waste your money buying water! Iceland is home to what many consider, the very best water in the world straight from the tap. I recommend bringing a canteen of some kind and fill up at the hotel or BNB before you head out. Buying water at any of the local stores is not only expensive but also unnecessary. The tap water tastes better than what you will get in most bottled waters in the U.S.
  3. Do not mock the folklore. The Icelandic people have many folklore’s that are fascinating to hear firsthand. The most staunch visitors may find them somewhat outlandish.  The belief in elves and other hidden creatures are alive and well today and are not to be mocked. If you have a really great guide, they may even sing a few of them to you in Icelandic and then translate the meaning!
  4. Do not disturb the rock piles. All across the landscape, you will see rock piles ranging from 2-4 feet and larger. Some have been placed for those mentioned in # 3, other have been places at the edges of roads. When the weather gets rough and fog/clouds roll in, they can aid drivers to stay on the road. For anyone that has driven the roads of Iceland, you know that you don’t want to veer off.DSC_4509
  5. DO NOT LITTER! On my most recent return to the Fjallabak Nature Reserve (Landmannalaugar-Wiki), I found some thoughtless person discarded their empty, instant noodle container on the ground. For anyone that has been to this amazing reserve, finding garbage really detracts from the otherworldly experience for others. Have respect for the Icelandic environment as it’s own citizens do and keep it preserved for those that will come after you.
